Candle Care

A few small habits help your Mittsu Doru candle burn cleanly, evenly and for as long as possible, up to about 55 hours.

Before lighting

  • Trim the wick to about 6mm before every burn. This keeps the flame steady and helps prevent smoke and soot.
  • Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from anything flammable.

The first burn

  • Let the wax melt as close to the edge of the vessel as you can on the first burn, within the 4-hour limit. This helps prevent tunnelling and gives a more even burn every time after.
  • As each vessel is handcrafted, some candles may take a little longer for the wax to reach the edges. This is normal.

While it burns

  • Burn your candle in still air, away from drafts, open windows, vents and ceiling fans. Drafts can make the flame flicker and smoke.
  • Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Storing your candle

  • In Singapore's humidity, candles may sometimes "sweat" and form small moisture beads on the surface. This does not affect quality. Simply wipe it away with a tissue before lighting.
  • To reduce sweating, store your candle in a cool, dry place away from drafts.

Small batches, small differences

Every Mittsu Doru candle is hand-poured in small batches with coconut, soy and beeswax, into a ceramic vessel crafted by hand (approximately 10.5cm wide × 8cm high). You may notice slight differences in size, colour, scent or appearance from one candle to the next. These natural variations do not affect how your candle performs.

How to clean your vessel

  1. Stop burning when about 1cm of wax remains at the bottom.
  2. Remove the leftover wax. Once the wax has cooled and hardened, scrape out the wax and wick with a spoon. Avoid using knives, for your safety.
  3. Dispose of it safely. Throw the wax in the trash. Never pour wax down the sink or drain.
  4. Clean the vessel. Soak it in hot, soapy water, then wash, rinse and dry thoroughly.
  5. Give it a new life. Use it as a planter, a pen holder, or simply keep it as a keepsake.
